Well, hello my friends!
Doing this show for almost 4 years, the one question I’ve been asked is… “How long did you work for and what did you do for Clive Davis?”… ”What was your job?”
OK, so here goes!
I get a call from CLIVE DAVIS, who said to me, “Tony, you have a family to support right? And with most of American radio stations playing records by British bands like THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES, etc. … How would you like to work for our (CBS) music publishing company, April-Blackwood Music? You’ll work with young songwriters, sign new writers, work with singers, and you can help them achieve their dream! AND also work with the hottest record producers in the business and help get their hit recording artist to record new songs that we publish!” Stunned…. I said, “Clive…why me?” He answered, “Tony, you’ve already worked with the greats like DON KIRSHNER’S music publishing company, and Dynasty, where you were surrounded by songwriting geniuses like CAROLE KING, GERRY GOFFIN, BARRY MANN, CYNTHIA WEIL, NEIL SEDAKA, and his co-writer HOWARD GREENFIELD.” He said, “Who better could I hire? What do you say?” Well, fortunately, gratefully I said YES!!
So, this Saturday night I get the chance to relive and reflect on my four magical years working for CLIVE DAVIS, as he has me representing and even signing people like BARRY MANILOW, and representing songwriters and artists to the likes of… JAMES TAYLOR, LAURA NYRO, BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS, and DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS, BST’s lead singer, who also wrote “Spinning Wheel”, a mega-hit for BLOOD, SWEAT, & TEARS!
And then represent the publishing of the late, great LAURA NYRO. She wrote “Wedding Bell Blues”, and “Stoned Soul Picnic” recorded by the 5TH DIMENSION. And oh so many more that I’m not able to list here, but they will be listed on my playlist for you to hear this Saturday night! Oh yes, for sure it was a magical, incredible 4 years working for CLIVE DAVIS…and get this…and who is my guest on “Who’s Behind The Music?” this Saturday night? Well, his name is ANDY GOLDMARK!! Who, because of my job I can proudly say, I signed to be a staff songwriter at April-Blackwood Music, both Columbia Records music publishing companies! ANDY GOLDMARK went on to become a hit songwriter and hit record producer for artists like ROBERTA FLACK and MICHAEL BOLTON!
In fact, he is the co-songwriter on MICHAEL BOLTON’S giant hit-record “Love Is A Wonderful Thing”!! And then, ANDY GOLDMARK continues on by writing JERMAINE JACKSON’S big hit “Dynamite”, and then with one of my favorite artist songwriters of all time …CARLY SIMON!!! ANDY co-wrote with CARLY
“All I Want Is You”. So, yes I am so proud to have signed songwriter, artist, and record producer Mr. ANDY GOLDMARK, while working for CLIVE DAVIS! I’m humbled, honored, and so proud that he has agreed to take my call and come on as my guest this Saturday night!
