Hello Cousins!
Our Special guest this week is Barbara Harris founding member of the Girl Group “The Toys”. Barbara started her singing career in her hometown Church – she was 11 years old. In high school she joined a group called
‘The Charlettes’. They did background vocals for several recording artists.
Their big break came at talent show in Brooklyn – they were introduced to Major record producer and label owner Bob Crewe. They were offered a recording contract on Crewe’s DynoVoice label and were renamed “The Toys”.
Here’s the amazing part of The Toy’s story – they used a piano piece from a Bach exercise book (Minuet In G-Major) – amazingly added a Motown baseline to it and “AlecaZam” –The Toys “Lovers Concerto” was born. The song jumped to number 2 on the Pop Charts and was awarded a Gold Disc. They followed that success with another hit – “Attack” another Top 20 recording for the band. “The Toys” enjoyed continued success with their appearances on major TV shows – Hullaballoo and Shindig.
They also were in the 1967 Beach Movie – “It’s A Bikini World”.
We happily welcome Barbara Harris to MusicRadio WABC. (Saturday 4/23/22)
