In 2021, we celebrated the birthday of actress TELMA HOPKINS, who I’m proud to say along with JOYCE VINCENT and myself, we became known as TONY ORLANDO & DAWN. Since then, our listeners have asked us to replay this beautiful reunion of TELMA, JOYCE VINCENT, and I as we celebrate TELMA HOPKINS birthday, and so we shall again this Saturday night! Oh my God did we have a dream come true carpet ride, recording & tv show career from 1970 to 1977, with five Number One single records… ”Candida”, “Knock Three Times”, “Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose?” , “He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You)”, and our signature multi-million seller “Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Ole’ Oak Tree”. We charted an incredible 23 times, plus two Platinum albums, and then…OMG…our own network television variety show from 1973 to 1977 on the CBS Television Network! And by the way, we are proud to state we were the first Prime Time variety show to be hosted by a multi-racial singing group, and the first singing group a to ever host their own Prime Time television show on a major network in television history! So, this Saturday I’m proud to celebrate the birthday of TELMA HOPKINS! The last time we aired this show, the response was through the roof and we’ve been asked to replay this show over and over again, and so by doing so this Saturday night I’m able to share with you the incredible career of this most talented artist. As an example, on this Saturday night show every song I play, TELMA was a major part of.
Here are some examples… She sang background on these iconic records long before her time in TONY ORLANDO& DAWN: MARVIN GAYE’s “ I Heard It Through The Grapevine”…also sang backgrounds on mostly every FOUR TOPS hits, also “Shaft” with ISAAC HAYES when she was in his group (“Hot Buttered Soul” )and she made that famous line to Mr. Hayes, “SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!”, on that Multi-Grammy award winning record “Shaft” from the motion picture of the same name. TELMA’s playlist goes on for two hours of hits that she had a major role in their success, not only with those great artists, but also on the Tony & Dawn hits and tv show. But, then after our magic carpet ride came to an end, TELMA’s career continued to soar only now as an actress. She may be accurately described today as the longest running television actress and performer in television history! Starting in 1973 with our tv show, and continued on in the historical series “Roots.” Plus, 3 years in “Bosom Buddies”, 4 years on “Gimme A Break” where she co-starred with NELL CARTER, 15 years as Aunt Rachel on “Family Matters”, 5 years on “Half and Half”, 3 years on the series “Are We There Yet?”, and the Netflix hit “Dead To Me”…just to name a few! Along with her Disney series and recent Hallmark Christmas film , and this year made a remarkable performance in the motion picture “The Matrix 4”. So, for those fans who love TELMA HOPKINS, and who missed this show the first time …Here ya go!!! Yes, join me, Tony Orlando, and yes, even JOYCE VINCENT of DAWN who makes a surprise visit when we throw our birthday party for our friend and sister, TELMA HOPKINS!
