Hey Cousins!
“I’d like you to meet my nephew Paul, he’s 15 and he wrote a song. Would you play it?”
That is how I met his nephew – Paul – Paul Anka.
I loved the song and I played it 8 times on my Show. The Song was “Diana”. That’s was the beginning of an amazing career. His parents owned a restaurant in Ottawa, Canada where local entertainers dined everyday. He fell in love with show business. Young Paul taught himself to play guitar and piano as a teenager and eventually formed a group called “The Bobbysoxers.”
In 1957 Paul traveled to New York City hoping to get his music recorded. ABC/Paramount quickly put him under contract and “Diana” became an International hit, selling more than 20 million copies. Paul’s hits kept on coming – “Lonely Boy” (1959), “Put Your Head On My Shoulder” (1959), and the iconic “Puppy Love”(1960).
His writing skills captured the biggest stars, including – Tom Jones (“She’s A Lady”) and the English lyrics to Frank Sinatra’s classic “My Way.” One of his must successful songs was the theme- song for Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show.”
