Ray and Jill singing about a girl named “Paula” and a guy named “Paul” was missing something. So Producer Shelby Singleton changed their names to Paul and Paula. Our special visitor this week will be Jill Jackson or as we know her as Paula – as in “Hey, Hey Paula, I’m gonna marry you someday.”
Unfortunately, Ray Hildebrand (Paul) passed away in August of 2023. The duo met while attending Howard Payne University in Texas. A local radio personality asked his listeners to go on the Air and sing their favorite song for a charity event. Ray (Paul) wrote (lyrics) to a song about his best friend’s girlfriend “Paula”. There you have it. The song became so popular locally that they were asked to record it. “Hey Paula” sold more than two million copies reached number one on the pop charts and number one on the R&B charts (1962). The duo followed their International hit with “Young Lovers” and “First Quarrel” (1963).
