Hello my friends!
It is hard to believe that we are celebrating our 50th year since our variety show “TONY ORLANDO AND DAWN” made its debut!
Yes, in 1974… wow!
We actually first aired July, the Summer of 1973, for only four weeks during a trial run. Two other recording acts, also were on a trial run… THE HUDSON BROTHERS in the month of June, and BOBBY GENTRY in August… whichever act got the biggest viewing audience and won the highest in the Nielsen ratings would then go on to a regular prime time 8pm weekly variety show.
Well, we got lucky because the “TONY ORLANDO AND DAWN VARIETY SHOW” had 30 plus-million people tune in that Summer to our July tryout.
So, we began a TV DREAM journey, and went on every Wednesday night at 8pm, starting a full season in January of 1974.
So, this Saturday night we will have a playlist of some of Billboard’s greatest hits for that incredible year of 1974, a decade for music-making and dream journey for 3 young starry eyed kids, TELMA HOPKINS, JOYCE VINCENT, and myself. And to this day, we TONY and TELMA and JOYCE (DAWN), are so very proud to have been the first multiracial recording artists to ever have their own prime time network television show, and the only singing group to have a variety network show!
Group defined as more than two people, such as SONNY & CHER, and DONNY & MARIE.
So, it is hard to imagine that all of that was 50 years ago!!! Well, this Saturday night, I’ve decided to play the music of that year in celebration of a dream come true magic carpet ride for me, TELMA, and JOYCE. So, please join the celebration with me this Saturday night!
Right here on Music Radio 77 WABC! After all, there is only two reasons this impossible dream came true…GOD and You!!!
