Hello Record Collectors!
It is true… something called “vinyls” are selling big time these days! You know those vinyl, those LP’s that you pulled out out of a cardboard sleeve that had great art and great photos of the artists on its cover, and liner notes on the back that told the story of its content, its list of songs, and more info of the recording artists themselves!
A time when there were two sides to the disc called the album or the LP. The choice of playing one of those two were up to you, and when you pulled it out of its cardboard sleeve, you were left with 6 cuts of recordings on one side, and 6 on the other side! They were referred to as the “A-side” and “B-side” of the album. But, where the “A-side” and “B-side” became really important was on the two sided smaller vinyl we referred to as the “45 RPM”.
Now that’s our show this Saturday night! Here’s why…When the 45 gets released, it is then referred to as the “single”. Now, the song chosen by the record companies as the choice for radio stations to play is always on what was called the “A-side”….that’s what they agreed on as the hit/“A-side” to promote. But, more often than you would think, either by some radio programmer or some disc jockey, they would, on their own, play what was called the “B-side”…a recording just put there so there is no vacant back side…in other words, no empty side behind the “A-side”. On the show this Saturday night, we will play all the “B-sides” that by fate, or by one programmer or DJ that had the guts to play the “B-side” and it becomes the big hit! And sometimes, the “A-side” and “B-side” become a double sided hit!
These 45’s are no longer sold… All is on social media and streaming now. But, this Saturday night, we will have fun by playing all of the “B-sides” that became “A-side” million-sellers! So, climb aboard my “Time Machine”, go back and we will play as many “B-side” GIANTS that we can! I don’t know about you, but I miss everything about those “A-side” and “B-side” days…
The sight of the 45 RPM’s stacked to a perfect height…to watch the robotic arm pick my choice of the “A-side” or “B-side” through the glass of a jukebox, to discover what the “B-side” might be, and discover that you may love it better than the so-called “A-side”!
Now a days, it’s a platform on your phone…streaming services like Spotify or Apple music, or YouTube. All great, but no longer in my hands to feel and touch the “A-side” and “B-side” …like so many things I cherished, the “B-side” is gone!
The young generation of today have no idea what the “B-side” is or was, or how important it was back in those Rock and Roll days! Well, this Saturday night, let’s have a Jukebox dream come true, and listen to all the “B-sides” that became the “A-sides” and monster hits….Right here on Music Radio 77 WABC… one of the most powerful, most iconic, most historical Radio stations in the Nation!
